Seeking Peaks Among Clouds|3-Day Magical Trip to Zhangjiajie, 3 Travellers to the Avatar Secret Land

Oct162026

Two friends and I, a group of three, booked a 3-day pure-play small-group tour to Zhangjiajie. Finally, we got to see the spectacular mountain peaks I’d read about in books. The package covers tickets, accommodation, transportation and a tour guide. There is no forced consumption at all. Our guide knows the local mountains well and arranged a well-paced itinerary, letting us immerse ourselves effortlessly in the magical scenery of western Hunan.

Day 1: Tianmen Mountain: Heavenly Gate & Cliff-Hanging Plank Road

We set off early for Tianmen Mountain. The long mountain cable car slowly lifted us up, and the city shrank beneath our feet. We walked along the west glass plank road clinging to the cliff, with mist drifting around us. Later we reached Tianmen Cave, a giant arch embedded in the mountain. The 999 stone steps look breathtaking. In the afternoon, we took the shuttle bus along the winding 99-bend Heavenly Avenue. In the evening, we visited 72 Wonder Buildings. When the lights turned on, the layered Tujia stilt houses looked stunning. We tried authentic local snacks.

Day 2: Wulingyuan · Yuanjiajie: Step into Avatar’s Peak Forest

We spent the whole day at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Entering from the main gate, we took the park shuttle to the Bailong Elevator, which lifts us to the mountaintop in just 88 seconds. Yuanjiajie is the highlight. Mihu Platform, Qiankun Pillar (the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain) and the No.1 Bridge Under Heaven. Stone pillars rise straight from the ground, wrapped in drifting clouds, just like a fairyland. Our guide shared geological stories and helped us find great photo spots. In the evening, we strolled along Xibu Street and enjoyed the lively night market of western Hunan.

Day 3: Golden Whip Stream + Yellow Dragon Cave: Clear Stream & Mysterious Cave

In the morning, we hiked Golden Whip Stream. Tall trees form a canopy over the crystal-clear stream, surrounded by fantastic peaks. It’s known as a natural oxygen bar. In the afternoon, we visited Yellow Dragon Cave. The huge cave is filled with stalactites, with an underground river flowing quietly. Lit up, it looks incredibly magical. After the tour, we packed up and ended this unforgettable trip to Zhangjiajie.

Travel Postscript
This small group of 3 worked really well. Our guide adjusted routes according to weather. Temperatures vary greatly on mountains, so wear anti-slip hiking shoes. Fog often rolls in on rainy days; if you catch sea of clouds, the view is absolutely spectacular. No photo can fully capture the beauty of Zhangjiajie. You have to come and witness nature’s masterpiece in person.

Personal Travel Tips

1. Zhangjiajie’s scenic spots cover a large area with plenty of walking. It is necessary to wear comfortable non-slip sports shoes to avoid fatigue.
2. Mountain weather is changeable with frequent morning mist. It is recommended to carry light coats and portable rain gear all year round.
3. Core scenic spots, cable cars and elevator tickets need real-name advance reservation. It is recommended to book in advance during peak tourist seasons.
4. Wild macaques are active in the forest area. Do not carry food in your hands or tease them to ensure travel safety.
