Foreign Tourist’s 3-Day Travel Diary of Zhangjiajie: Encounter the Peak Forest Wonderland and Immerse in the Landscape of Western Hunan
My name is Clara, a travel enthusiast from Canada. I have long been fascinated by China’s breathtaking mountain scenery. This time, I travelled with three friends — four of us in total — and booked a 3-day pure small-group tour of Zhangjiajie. This two-night trip delivers excellent value for money, with fully transparent pricing and zero hidden fees. Our tour guide Smith accompanied us the whole time. He knows every corner of Zhangjiajie like the back of his hand and is well-versed in Tujia traditions. The itinerary keeps a nice relaxed pace. In merely three days, we got to dive deep into the extraordinary quartz sandstone peak forest landscape and experience the distinctive local culture of Western Hunan.

Day 1: First Sight of Wulingyuan|Breathe fresh air at Golden Whip Stream, Meet the Avatar Peak Forest at Yuanjiajie
• After arriving in Wulingyuan, the fresh and humid mountain forest air instantly washed away our travel fatigue. Early in the morning, we entered Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and started our adventure in this wonderland.
• In the morning, we strolled along Golden Whip Stream. The stream is crystal clear, flanked by towering ancient trees and lush greenery. The gurgling water and birdsong fill the woods. We enjoyed the original natural scenery. Walking along the gentle trail felt like staying in a natural oxygen bar, calming our minds completely.
• In the afternoon, we took the Bailong Elevator up to the mountain top and visited the core scenic spot, Yuanjiajie. Countless steep quartz sandstone peaks rise abruptly from the ground. Thin mist curls around the stone pillars. We saw the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain from the movie Avatar — Qiankun Pillar, as well as famous sights like the Mihu Platform and the No.1 Bridge Under Heaven. The magnificent and dreamlike landscape took our breath away.

Day 2: Sea of Clouds at Tianzi Mountain|Leisure trip along Ten-Mile Gallery, Enjoy the scroll of peak forests
• Early on the second day, thin mist shrouded the mountains, perfect for viewing sea of clouds among the peaks. We climbed up Tianzi Mountain. Standing on the viewing platform, thousands of peaks emerged and disappeared in the rolling clouds, just like a flowing Chinese ink painting. Iconic rock formations such as the Imperial Brush Peak and Fairy Scattering Flowers look vivid, showing the amazing craftsmanship of nature.
• In the afternoon, we visited the Ten-Mile Gallery. We took the sightseeing train slowly through the valley. On both sides stand peculiar rocks and green mountains. Guide Kai told us folk legends behind those rock shapes, making the mountain scenery much more lively.
• We wandered through the mountains all day without rushing. We truly understood Zhangjiajie’s reputation: "Three thousand strange peaks, eight hundred beautiful streams".

Day 3: Tianmen Mountain above the Clouds|Cliff plank road for the perfect ending
• On the last day of our trip, we headed for Zhangjiajie’s landmark — Tianmen Mountain. We boarded the long alpine cable car and ascended slowly from the city to the mountain top thousands of meters high, overlooking rolling mountains and the town below.
• We walked along the thrilling Guigu Plank Road and glass plank road built on the steep cliff. Clouds surged under our feet while mountains stretched far into the distance, as if we were walking in the sky. Finally we visited the grand Tianmen Cave, a huge natural cave piercing through the mountain. Its imposing view filled us with awe.
• Our 3-day journey in Zhangjiajie came to an end. From green valleys and steep peaks to cloud sea wonderland and cliff trails, every view is extraordinary. The natural beauty and simple folk customs of Western Hunan left unforgettable memories for the four of us.

Final Thoughts
Zhangjiajie is a world-class hidden gem in Western Hunan, featuring amazing peaks, sea of clouds, clear streams and forests. It is a fairyland without filters. Special thanks to our tour guide Kai. His vivid and patient explanations covered mountain stories and minority cultures. The well-arranged pure-play itinerary had no shopping or hidden costs. He solved all our troubles during the trip and brought us a relaxing, wonderful and healing tour of Western Hunan.
Personal Travel Tips
There are many hiking paths in Zhangjiajie scenic areas. Wear comfortable non-slip sneakers to reduce fatigue.
Mountain weather changes fast, and temperature varies greatly between morning and evening. Bring a light jacket and portable raincoat regardless of sunny or cloudy days.
Tickets, cable cars and elevators for popular scenic spots need real-name reservations in advance. Make plans ahead during peak seasons to avoid delays.
Wild macaques live in the mountains. Do not hold food to feed them or touch them for safety.
