We are from Canada. We saw the unique peaks of Zhangjiajie in documentaries a long time ago. This time we flew to China specially to visit the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain in Avatar and immerse ourselves in the karst wonderland.

Day 1: Tianmen Mountain | Heavenly Gate and Glass Walkway in the Clouds
• Cableway above clouds: Take the long Tianmen Mountain Cableway, overlook rolling mountains from the air. Peaks surrounded by mist create an amazing atmosphere.
• Walkway adventure: Hike the West Valley Ghost Valley Walkway and the popular glass walkway, with deep valleys below your feet — thrilling and breathtaking.
• Heavenly Gate visit: Ride the mountain escalator to Heavenly Gate Cave, witness the natural mountain-piercing cave and admire the masterpiece of nature.
Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park | Secret Valley of Avatar Peaks
• Bailong Elevator: Ride the Bailong Elevator to the mountaintop in seconds, overlook thousands of jagged peaks vertically. The view stuns you at first sight.
• Yuanjiajie exploration: Visit the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain — Qiankun Pillar, and the No.1 Bridge under Heaven. Step into the floating peak world from the movie Avatar.
• Tianzi Mountain viewpoint: Head to Tianzi Mountain to view Imperial Brush Peak and Fairy Presenting Flowers. Feel mountain breezes among endless peaks.
Day 3: Golden Whip Stream + 72 Wonder Buildings | Mountain Scenery & Tujia Culture Finale
• Golden Whip Stream hiking: Wander along the clear stream, surrounded by towering peaks. You may spot macaques in the woods and enjoy the primitive forest.
• Tujia night scene: Visit 72 Wonder Buildings at dusk. The layered stilted buildings light up, showing unique Tujia architectural charm.
• Western Hunan cuisine: Taste authentic Tujia three-pot stew, cured pork with bamboo shoots. Finish the Zhangjiajie trip with rich local flavors.
Final Thoughts
Our 3-day trip to Zhangjiajie exceeded all our expectations! As Canadian travelers, we worried about the huge scenic area, complicated reservations and tough route planning. Luckily our local tour guide arranged everything. The schedule is relaxing, no forced shopping. The guide patiently explained geological knowledge of the mountains and Tujia culture. The combination of strange peaks, sea of clouds and streams forms a one-of-a-kind wonderland on earth. Highly recommended for foreign visitors who want to see amazing mountains in China
